Im currently looking for a laptop and came across this one. I read the reviews and its been pretty good so far. Before buying this, I just wanted to know your opinions on it, that would be great. Thanks :D

Its 750 CAD

Gateway 15.6" Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz Laptop

The video card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 (I dont really know much about ATI's, is this a good one?)

The first negative thing I noticed about it and maybe it's normal for Laptops, but the hard drive is only a 5400rpm drive. If you're planning to play games on it, that's going to slow loading times down a good amount.

Its going to be used for both school and gaming. For school, all I really need to Microsoft office, thats pretty much it lol

I guess you can say its for gaming. And yeah Im not much of a computer kind of guy, so I dont know about the hard drive and ATI either. Will it be like really slow? Compared to the old desktop Im using right now, (Intel R, Petium 4 CPU 2.40GHz, 2.41GHz, 1.00GB of RAM)

Do you guys also have any suggestions? Budget should be $1200~ and less

Here are some on Newegg based on your price range that are pretty decent.

http://www.newegg.ca...N82E16834220696
This one has a decent video card for a laptop, has a faster hard drive and better then average memory in it.

If you're more of an nVidia fan this would be the one to get. It has a larger hard drive but slower memory.

Both would be adequate for what you'll be using it for though depending on what games you planning on playing of course.

my buddy just bought one of these from best buy for $1099, I'm not sure where they're getting their $1800 price from.

the specs as i remember them were

500 gb hdd
1 gb evga video
6 gb RAM
17 inch screen
win 7 ultimate
2.53 pentium i7 dual core
if anyone remembers the xps m1730 (i think) it's the one with the XPS LED logo on the back.. This one has a blue LED ASUS logo.

I was and am more than a little bit jealous that laptop kicked ass

well i realize you don't know me that well, but if you have someone you know and trust in the states you can always ask them to buy it for you and ship it to you. I'd be willing to do it, but like i said $1000 bucks is alot to give to someone you don't know lol. but hey it's all good.

what he said. you really dont want to be lugging around a gaming laptop to class. get a dinky lil crapbook for the school and get a wicked badass desktop for home. advantages of desktops include easily upgradable cheap and heating issues are null to nonexistent and if they do indeed exist for some reason are easily remedied.

also might look into refurbished ive been pleased with dell referbs but i believe johnny mentioned he was selling some cheap old lil laptops for around 200 bucks that would be wonderful for classes. donno if hes still got those floating around might ask him if your interested.

I agree with these gentlemen. A laptop shouldn't be used for serious gaming. There are so many advantages on having a full desktop for gaming over a laptop, but in the end, it's your choice since you'll be the one spending the $$$ Posted Image

I spent $2500 three years ago for a gaming laptop. Really not worth the investment unless you plan on going to a TON of LAN's and don't like dragging a desktop around. Because my laptop is so big and power hungry, I don't really like bringing it to classes and it's pretty loud anyway. I also can't upgrade the laptop much because it has a bunch of components that are merged, including the video card. I've had overheating issues over the summer even when I have a cooling pad and a fan pointed at it, and basically the only thing I like is the warranty which I spent an extra $250 for.

I'm going to build a $400 desktop over the summer which will dominate this laptop and probably be the equal of a $1000 laptop at the present time. I recommend doing the same, and then if you want to spend 5-6 hundred on a laptop for school, you're probably better off in both ways and you'll save money. It will probably be weird to your parents, but you can get a tiny laptop and it's SO nice for classes, a couple of my friends have one. That way you also won't have any easy distractions when you try to do work. -.-

Hope you reconsider, I don't know anyone who's bought a gaming laptop and been really satisfied with it.

Sorry for the late reply

So after a bit of thought of the suggestions on the forums and discussion with my brother, I've decided to buy a desktop instead. I went to NCIX today and asked them to help build my comp, heres what they came up with

Budget- 1k to 1.2k

Intel Core i5 750 Quad Core
Gigabyte CrossFireX USB3.0 SATA3 Motherboard
Western Digital Caviar Black Dual Proc Hard Drive
Samsung Black DVD writer
XFX Radeon HD 5770 850MHZ Video Card
Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64BIT DVD OEM
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W ATX 20/24 PIN SLI

All this adds up with about $1,206 Canadian dollars

What do you guys think? Is this price suitable? Powerful desktop?

Thanks~

i'm unfamiliar with canadian prices except i know they're higher than us prices, but that's a good $300 or $400 higher than it'd be here which sounds pretty fuckin lame. you should be getting a 5850 for that kind of money, along with a better case and a decent hsf and potentially a better psu - not that that psu is bad. also they dont tell you the motherboard model which is weird

First of, VERY GLAD you went with a gaming desktop instead of a gaming/school laptop in one.

Overall, it's a pretty good build imho. There are a lot of quality components in there. I'm 100% sure you can assemble it for $900 (or so) if you shop around for good deals and build it yourself. Although, assembling the parts yourself will probably take some expertise/knowledge which you may or not have (not sure if you put together a PC yourself in the past).

Not a huge fan of the case, due to the lack of space/airflow.. but it should be good for your setup (especially if you don't plan to do anything crazy like overclock your computer).

All I ask for is some pictures of your setup once you get it, which you can post here: http://www.cause4ala...ost-your-setup/
