My computer just started to freeze every 10 minutes that it's on, and I'll have to restart it for it to function again...and this started at like 3 am last night
I honestly have no idea what's wrong.

got an 8600 gts nvidia video card
intel core 2 duo cpu
2 gigs ram
xp pro sp2
Asus motherboard

had my comp for about 2-3 years? video card for about 1?(bought it refurbished)

do any of your internal fans stop working?


i had the same issue and the main cooling fan i had was jammed by a tiny wire so it wouldnt turn itself on and then my comp would shut down...i opened the case when i started my comp and noticed the fan not spinning, took the wire out from one of its blades, and bam it started spinning and everything is all good

It could be an overheating issue but most modern systems will shutdown to protect hardware. Next time it occurs and you restart go in to the BIOS and check the temp of the board and make sure that it shows that all fans are operating. Otherwise I would re-trace your steps as far as driver updates or new software installation that you may have done pretty much right before the issue started. Do you still get a display when it locks up? Like can you still see whatever it was you were doing?

i'll try the bios next time it happens, although i might get lost in there :S

the fans all appeared to be working from what i could tell PSC

I can still see everything Haze, it just freezes on that image of whatever it was I was doing
Haven't updated or installed anything in the past week, so I can't imagine it being anything in that dept.(granted that it started last night)

The MB temp seems a little high to me but nothing crazy. I don't see any info about the chipset fan but it may not be available. Take the side of your case off so you can see the board and look for a little fan attached directly to the MB. I would turn the comp on once you locate it and make sure it's spinning (Don't touch anything inside the case after you turn it on :) It will hurt). I've seen similar freezing when this fan goes out (Happens a a lot on boards).

Damn, don't see that very often on non-OEM MB's. The chip that says ASUS under your CPU fan usally would have it's own fan. Have you tried to leave the system off for a couple hours and then tried to use it?

Yeah, I went to bed and turned it off for like 7-8 hrs? I normally let it run while I sleep though. Even tried cleaning inside it..

Is it possible my video card is responsible?

Could be. It should also have a fan. Make sure it is operating. This does seem to be some sort of overheating issue though due to the way it is occuring.

the fan on it works

although right now it hasnt frozen and comps been up for 40 mins...longest since it started happening
all i did was go in safe mode for a little while

just that things tend to load a little slower, for ex on the forums, instead of the greenbox/arrow next to names it'll say Icon

also, programs like firefox have been not responding(only happened once or twice) and ending the task doesn't close it right away like it normally would...takes like an extra minute or two to close


just froze again, but came back after a few mins, but i couldn't use my microphone in vent anymore

Does this happen when using your internal video card as well? Basically you want to try to isolate the problem, so switch over to using the onboard video card and report back.
